Voigtlander 50mm f1 Nokton REVIEW for Canon EOS R!
Bought it and it’s so cool
Your opinion on Canon's commitment to APS-C lenses has been proven over years of neglect from Canon, even before the RF mount. Have they ever made an L-lens specifically for crop sensors? They've always treated the crop-bodies as an upgrade path to full frame, which is a shame. Fujifilm really redefined what a premium crop sensor system could be-smaller, more affordable, and still offering great image quality.
Unfortunately the camera fails to connect via WiFi to the iPhone via the LUMIX Lab app, even after pairing via Bluetooth. This renders the experience of transferring LUTs and photos useless.
Are you in an area with lots of wifi networks around? I found it hard to connect until i was outside
@@cameralabs Yes I am. Interesting. I’ll try outside.
If you shoot a selfie with this camera in auto mode will the photo still be sharp?
not nifty fifty at all , far too expensive and killing the meaning of the definition. its a great one but 4 times to expensive for that title
Been on my list for 1 years but ifthis time if i do good on studies they would buy me one
Good luck with your studies! Make sure they get you film too!
That's been really useful to see it compared to 2 quality L lenses, and I'm surprised at how well the 16mm is holding out compared to them. It's convinced me to go for one for a travel lens. Another video from an astrophotographer also convinced me it's surprisingly good here too, in spite of the issue of quite a bit of chromatic aberration; it seems this is fairly easily corrected. Thanks for doing this detailed video.
You're welcome!
Is this one better than the original Sony 24-70 GM i? I’m in the market for a 24-70 and I found the original Sony for the same price as the new Sigma mark ii.
I'd go for the new Sigma over the old GM
I just don't care about video. I care about weight, ease of use for my aging vision and price. I prefer to buy used
X-H2 + X-T50, the perfect combo. The X-T50 + 27 pancake fits in a large pocket.
This is the best video about v10, thank you so much
Happy to help!
Why is this lens $700.00 Canadian cheaper and the front element so small compared to the EF lens yet is a 1.4?
Different optical designs
Gordon, I have this lens now. It is sharp but the amount of chromatic abbreviation is high for a lens at this price point. Even with the lens profile enabled in Adobe Camera Raw I have to add +4 to get rid of the last of the purple fringe. Yes, it’s weather sealed and, yes, it is well made but I’m having some buyer’s remorse over the purchase. 😱
I didn't think it's out yet, that's impressive! Surprised to hear about coloured fringing though, as most modern lenses and bodies manage to avoid it.
@@cameralabs I preordered it when it was announced and it started shipping last week. I’ve only shot with it a couple of times. The sharpness is good and, at least with my copy, is sharper into the corners than the older EF version. If I open a raw file in Canon’s DPP app, they manage to remove the CA. The Adobe lens profile doesn’t quite get rid of it. If you open it up in something like Lumiar Neo it’s pretty bad. That’s not the kind of “lens character” I like. 🤦🏻♂️
@@ThroughJoesLens as it's such a new lens, I bet the RAW profile hans't been updated in all the converters yet, only DPP so far.
Thanks!
Thankyou!
How much digital correction have they implemented?
Not sure yet, normally not too much on bigger L lenses, but again, not tested that side yet
If it had an ISO dial, I'd buy it.
How about the X-T5?
Brilliant review as usual and the perfect comparison. Thank you.
Glad to help, i also made a newer video retesting it for Canon RF
@@cameralabs Thank you! I’ve already watched it. Not a moment too soon for Canon.
hi, could you help me fill out a questionnaire with photo prints? Thank you!🎉
I'm not sure what you mean!
@@cameralabs I have a photo printing project, and wants to look someone who prints photo can fill my survey
copied and pasted from your RF 16 review. Gordon, I'm a big fan of your work. I bought a kindle version of your book.... and then a real printed hardcover version because I wanted to see big, printed images. FWIW, I find the hardcover version to be superior. May I ask some advice? I have owned the RF 16 for a few years. helluva little lens. I love to shoot landscape photos. I looked at the 3 lenses u mentioned here quite a bit. I cannot imagine that I would need the wide aperture on the 15-35. I am leaning toward purchasing the 14-35 but wonder if I will see a significant improvement in photo quality over the prime that I now own. Next January I hope to photograph the NaPali coast from the sea. I have done this twice and both results have been ....good. I want to create a really excellent image. Am thinking of perhaps a few photos at 14 mm stitched together.... or maybe quite a few photos at 35 mm stitched together. I'm a serious amateur with enough discretionary income to buy either of these zooms... just undecided if I really want to spend that extra money for the 15-35
Thanks! This video is the only comparison I've made between these lenses, so after watching it, you'll know everything I know! As I recall, the 14-35 didn't stand out as much as I hoped in optical quality, so if you're looking for a big improvement in image quality, I'd go for a prime lens instead, even one of the cheaper STM models. If you're stitching, it's best to avoid really wide focal lengths anyway as there's too much distortion. So maybe go for the 35 STM
@@cameralabs Thank you!!

Thanks, I've answered your other comment
Just got mine today, and disappointed. The body is mainly plastic, quite overpriced since it is priced quite close to the amazingly well built 23mm r lm wr
Most new lenses are made with plastic these days,
4:58 is that a music studio?
It looks like it - it was a sample photo from Samsung.
@@cameralabs I thought it was your home studio
@@jan-martinulvag1953 I wish! I don't even have a studio to film my videos. I sit on my lounge sofa and pack away my camera after every recording.
When I heard about a 4.5 to 6.3 lens I wonder who's gonna buy an equivalent 7.2 to 10 in full frame?
Someone who doesn't want shallow depth of field effects and who has a camera with good high ISO performance or who films during the day without filters? PS - Sigma's 10-18 2.8 is coming later this year.
@@cameralabs maybe 👐🏻 me personally I really prefer the opportunity to have the versatility of an f2.8. Yes sigma come in late for canon
What is about chromatic aberation, distorion and vignetting? A modern L prime should be very good in this.
This was just a quick first look.
I used to own the original wide version and loved it. I've got an album in the loft that documents a lot of my early 20's in this wide format, which I'm so grateful for as the digital photos I took back then have long been lost. The biggest downside was the bulk and the cost of prints. Great to see an updated version of this camera, though. Brilliant video as always Gordon - I hope you're well mate!
Thanks Tom! That's interesting you've lost your digital files, but your physical prints are still safe, it's normally easier to backup and protect digital! But do make sure you scan those old photos, just in case!
Thanks for the review on this Gordon. When you brought up it actually lost the manual controls to lighten or darker the exposure I was surprised. I’m convinced at this point that the instax team is trying force people to buy the printer by releasing terrible camera options for their wide film. Time to find my wide 200 a backup. It has the best manual control set up of all the wide cameras hands down.
I often wonder what's going on with their planning, but I suspect - or hope - this may the the first in a new series where the second might be more sophisticated. This is the basic one.
I looked at sample photos of the R8 at DP review and they were gorgeous. And then I looked at the samples of the Pana S1 and I was shocked how bad they were.
The S1 is a previous generation for Lumix, whereas the R8 is still current for Canon. Better to compare current Lumix like S5 II or even GH7
@@cameralabs 5 days ago I took out lumix LX100 and Canon 350D and shot the same scenes with the two cameras and 350D was the best by far. It was so frustrating for me why I never use the LX100 and now I finally admitted to myself why. It is a cute camera , but........ For video its good.
@@jan-martinulvag1953 the LX100 is a fun camera for sure, but both it and the 350D are very old now in digital camera terms.
@@cameralabs Sony made a 12 mp full frame sensor for a reason and they should make an 8 mp aps c sensor too for the same reason.
@@jan-martinulvag1953 I think Canon made some camcorders with 8-12mp sensors for native 4k.
Me likes the 17-40mm EF because it's cheap, light and it works. How hard is that?
I owned and loved my 17-40 f4L, but my copy became soft in the corners at 40. At least 17 on mine was nice and sharp, as that's what i really wanted!
Digital images stored on tape lasts 100 years I am told.
So long as you have something to read them. That's the huge issue with any format. How many of us have working cassette or video tape recorders, and those were only from 40 years ago.
Hi Gordon, being a thrifty nifty-50+ amateur photographer I appreciate respected reviewers like yourself giving time to reviews of budget gear. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
I feel like closest focusing distance (especially when zooming) is a big point for flexibility when shooting Got an old powershot a800 which will focus basically no matter what
OMG! This is it? Let me fake a smile… just heard a song - “why do I keep f*!#in’ up?”🤭 My X-M1 gives me peace of mind.
Looks good for the R-50 body.
Yeah, sadly you won't have stabilisation, but it's still my preferred zoom for ANY of the APSC Canon bodies.
Is the hybrid zoom feature also available on the Sony ZV-E1 ? I just found it to be a really cool feature not mentioned by other reviewers.
Sony has clear image zoom, but it works differently. The hybrid zoom extends the entire range, so you still get the full optical wide-end as well as the digital tele
This sucker is sharp! I just obtained this lens.
Thank you for a great review. I just took delivery of a mint used copy in June 2024. And after one day very happy with its size and the small bag space it takes up on either my A7CII or A7CR. I do own the bigger and brighter 70-200/2.8 GM II but I bought specifically for use on my compact C camera bodies. Actually owned the original version one back when I started with Sony 10 years ago. So far so good. Take care.
You're welcome! I still have my original 70-200 f4G and use it for school sports on an APSC body.
Id still rather have a Panasonic gh7.
The GH7 is very strong.
What about Linux?
Didn't I mention Linux in the video?
How many are you buying?
If I owned a Canon APSC body, I'd be buying ALL of them.
Are all the future Sigma lenses mentioned for APSC ?
They've only confirmed the two zooms and four primes. Basically all of the DC DN lenses so far. Not sure about future ones
I spoke with Fuji Instax a number of months ago about their move to remove any buttons that offer control over exposure or flash: they simply aren't interested in making new cameras with these features anymore, so expect to see more cameras like this where we are locked into whatever settings the automatic exposure offers us. I bought the square version of this camera, and was severely disappointed at how under-exposed my shots were. Unless you're outside shooting in broad daylight, these new cameras just suck.
What a great little lens! I wish they made it in Canon EF-M mount. I've toyed with the idea of changing systems so i can use it but that would be dumb.If i accept a larger heavier setup there are much better lenses out there, including Sigma's great f1.8 zooms.
Im glad i decided to go with a printer
Hello, did you notice any focus jump/focus pulsating when you close up to the subject with autofocus on with this lens (PZ 16-35mm F4 G)? Mine seems to have the issue when I use gimbal to go in closer to the subject's face, it seems to have that zoom pump, but it is actually the focus going error for a very fast milliseconds (or looks like focusing the back of the subject in mine), and then slowly focus back to the subject, and it is quite frequent. Or sometimes it would just make that whole scene to have the shaking stutter effect for a millisecond, I had even set the focus shift sensitivity to the lowest, and it still does the same thing. For the body I'm currently using A7S3. Attached here is an example (not my video, but a clip I manage to found online which has the same issue as mine), look at the table at the bottom area and you'll understand what I meant: ruclips.net/video/DqZnYqg3zRA/видео.html Much appreciated for your replies, thank you.
Sadly not all AF systems are capable of perfect focus pulls, and you can get varied results not just on the body, but the AF area, AF response and speed, and even lighting and the subject itself. I'd experiment with different settings to see if you can improve it, but again, it's not unusual to find when you're looking for it.
@@cameralabs thanks for your reply, to clarify, you meant to say that this is normal for the body/lens as well ?
@@lunaglunaglunag I don't think I tested this lens on that body, but I have seen similar behaviour with all lenses and bodies in some situations.
@@cameralabs I am thinking of updating the body firmware to 3.01 to see if this would get fixed as I am still on 2.11, however I'm concerned of the other issues that may arise after updating
@@lunaglunaglunag just google the update and check forums to see if anyone's reported issues
Great made in Japan lens for Canon made in Japan cameras.
Thank you for the review! Is the 4K/6K photo mode completely gone? Can you still take photos while recording videos like previous LUMIX models? Thank you for the excellent review!
The 4k and 6k photo modes have gone, but there is preburst shooting
I bought one for 99 euro with 2 cf cards and 3 lenses and 6k clicks. Nice buy😂
That's a good price with lenses.
I might just keep my R7, after all. What we need is an APSC tele zoom with a 5.6 minimum aperture. The trouble with the FR100-500 is that over half of it's area is wasted by the crop. (1.6*1*6=2.56) It could either be a stop brighter or half the weight, both without losing quality. As for the RF100-400, R8 is really too dark for a crop camera at high speeds. An RF-s100-400 f5.6 should be doable at a similar size, weight and cost to the RF100-400 f8. What killed the M6 MkII for me was the lack of high quality native stabilized lenes and an unstabilized body.
A lot of work involved in this excellent review Gordon. You're a 'master' of reviews. 3 excellent lenses but the size of the RF version is really tempting ! Thanks Gordon !
You're very welcome!
I have a theory: If they release a more advanced camera later, let's call it the Instax Wide 600, the higher price of that camera needs to be justified by it being more advanced than the base model. Perhaps the 300 is already "too advanced" when compared to the future 600 model so people don't feel the need to upgrade. So by selling the 400 until the old 300 stock runs out, the Instax 600 will be compared to the 400, therefore making it look way more advanced and the price justified. The ugly color also fits this theory when the 600 is released in a more professional looking black.
